Socialist Youth Movement (SYM) condemns the attacks directed at Sekhukhune Express (SE) Comrades.

We have learned with great sadness that the leadership of SASCO and ANC in Motetema has went all out to attack members of Sekhukhune Express, an independent students’ organization that has joined Workers and Socialist Party (WASP). The attacks come after the rescheduling of SRC Elections in Sekhukhune FET College where SE is enjoying massive support from the students’ populace.

SASCO and ANC went to the private accommodation of Sekhukhune Express leaders threatening them and hired thugs to target the young comrades. Comrades have found it better to sleep under the trees in the mountain as it is only safe to be where the SASCO mafias cannot come looking for them. All this shameful acts are perpetuated by local tenderpreneurs who have been using student leaders to loot the public resources and have come to a realization that their dreams are shuttered as the ANC-aligned student formation has lost trust and confidence in the eyes of ordinary students.

The method of intimidation and threats adopted by the ANC does not come as a surprise to us and should be viewed as an attempt to silence those opposing corruption and other wrong elements in the college. We call for members of the public and Sekhukhune FET students to defend their leaders against these shenanigans who behave as if the world revolves around them and the buck stops with them. The young fighting soldiers who are committed to the struggle for the emancipation of the poor shouldn’t be discouraged but should regard this deed as the act of cowardice.

We pledge solidarity with our comrades in this difficult moment and urge them to cease at nothing in defending the interests of students and young people. We call upon WASP leaders in the community to mobilize young people and workers to expose these rotten elements that have become hopeless and irredeemable. The doomed shields of imperialism have no words but threats to supress the rising voice of the poor. The ANC must perish!
